Where are Your Children Most at Risk to Online Predators?

News stories may have led us to focus on social networking sites as presenting the biggest risk to children from online predators. While social networking sites do present a risk to children from unwanted sexual solicitations, recent reports indicate that there are other online forums that present a much greater risk. Today's youth prefer to hold their casual conversations through instant messaging (IM) or in chat rooms rather than by telephone. A certain feeling of anonymity accompanies this type of communication, which can create a favorable environment for online predators. Children and teens especially need to be given guidelines about suggestive language and other unwelcome solicitations made by their chat room and IM buddies. What this really shows is that parents not only need to talk to their kids about online safety, they need to be aware of and participate in all aspects of the Internet in which their children are engaged
